Sega Game Gear LCD Install

The Game Gear's original screen has not aged well — washed out colors, poor contrast, and a backlight that drains batteries rapidly. An IPS LCD upgrade replaces it entirely with a sharp, vivid modern display with accurate colors, multiple scaling modes, and better battery efficiency.

Popular options include the McWill LCD kit, the Hispeedido IPS screen, or the BennVenn screen all of which offer multiple display modes and scanline options for an authentic retro look on a modern panel.

⚠️ Compatibility Notice: Most IPS kits are compatible with original VA1 Game Gear motherboards only. Majesco Game Gear models (VA4/VA5) are not compatible with the majority of available LCD kits. Please verify your board revision before purchasing a kit.

⚠️ Recap Requirement: The Game Gear is notorious for capacitor failure, and a failing or leaking capacitor can damage a new LCD screen shortly after installation. Captain Retro will not install an IPS LCD on a Game Gear that has not been recapped. If your Game Gear has not already been recapped, please add our Game Gear Recap Service to your order or select it during checkout.

Captain Retro will not provide the kit for this install. Handhelds have multiple choices for screen replacements, which all require different installation methods and shell replacements.

The mod board required for this service is not included in the service price and must be sourced separately by the customer.
